Wind (n.)

wind (n.)
- "air in motion," O.E. wind, from P.Gmc. *wendas, from PIE *went-, from base *we- "blow" (source of L. ventus). Normal pronunciation evolution made this word rhyme with kind and rind (Donne rhymes it with mind), but shifted to a short vowel 18c., probably from influence of windy, where the short vowel is natural. The verb meaning "tire, put out of breath" is attested from 1811. Windfall is 1464, originally literal, of wood or fruit blown down by the wind, and thus free to all. Windshield first recorded 1902, as U.S. alternative to British windscreen (1905 in this sense). Windbag in slang sense of "person who talks too much" is from 1827.
